Magic For Beginners by Kelly Link
MARCH MEETING - TUESDAY MARCH 23RD
In March, we're doing something we've never done before - reading a book of short stories.  Selected as a Time Best Book of the Year, Kelly LInk's book Magic for Beginners mixes day to day life with magic without blinking.  Her version of normal is a bit warped.  A quote for you:  "This guy Soap is at a party out in the suburbs.  The thing you need to know about Soap is that he keeps a small framed oil painting in the trunk of his car.  The painting is about the size of a paperback novel.  Wherever Soap goes, this oil painting goes with him.  But he leaves the painting in the trunk of his car, because you don't walk around a party carrying a painting.  People will think you're weird."  This should be an interesting book.  Probably a little odd.  The meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 23rd at 6:30pm at the All Star Grill.  Note this is the 4th Tuesday of the month, which is when the group meets - but it is not the last Tuesday of the month - don't let the 5th Tuesday confuse you.  I'd hate to have you miss the meeting.  There is a 10% discount for anyone who buys this book up until the day of the meeting - whether you plan to attend or not!

APRIL MEETING - TUESDAY, APRIL 27TH
In April we'll be reading Little Bee by Chris Cleave, a return to our "quality fiction" genre.  This is a very haunting book - the story of two women who meet on a beach in Africa in a terrifying incident - and meet again two years later in England.

A BOOK CLUB FAVORITE
Birds in Fall by Brad Kessler is a touching story about the aftermath of a plane crash.  It's beautifully written, touching, sad, joyous, and life embracing.  For some reason, when talking about this book, we laughed more than during any other book discussion.  It was a great meeting - a reaffirmation of the kinds of connections that diverse groups of people can make when they share a common bond.
